Seoul clarifies its position to G20 members regarding the landmine explosion on the border with North Korea

South Korea has asked the G20 countries to support its efforts to promote stability on the Korean Peninsula, and stressed the need to advance dialogue between the two Koreas.

This came during South Korean Foreign Minister Joo Hyun’s participation in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on Friday and Saturday in Atlanta, USA, in which the minister addressed the incident of a landmine explosion in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.

South Korea blamed its northern neighbor for the September 21 mine explosion inside the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, which injured three South Korean soldiers, and called for military talks to ease tensions.

Pyongyang , for its part, denied responsibility for the incident , vowing to take military action along the border if necessary.

South Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday that Minister Cho clarified Seoul’s position on the explosion incident during the Atlanta meeting, noting that communication between the two Koreas is more important than ever to ease tensions.

The South Korean minister asked G20 members to support his country's efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

He also stressed the need for international cooperation to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that his country would continue to make substantial contributions to ensuring safe passage through this strategic waterway.
