In addition to genetic factors and a history of diabetes in the family, obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle can also contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, the most common type of diabetes.
According to information published on the official website of the Ministry of Health, type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by increased blood sugar levels in the body due to insulin resistance or inadequate insulin production.
In an interview with ANTARA in Jakarta, Tuesday (29/4), dr. Fatih Anfasa, MSc, PhD, Sp.PD said that the habit of consuming food and drinks with high sugar content can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus.
In addition, the habit of consuming foods with high fat and salt content can trigger obesity.
Doctor Fatih said that obesity can trigger the emergence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This happens because excess body fat can interfere with the work of the insulin hormone in the body.
Therefore, the internal medicine specialist who graduated from the University of Indonesia recommends measuring body weight and evaluating weight gain periodically to prevent obesity.
So, it is better to control the consumption of fast food and packaged foods and drinks that have high sugar, fat and salt content to avoid the risk of getting type 2 diabetes mellitus.
