The occupation denies its commitment to a ceasefire with Hamas, and efforts are underway to recover the bodies of four Americans from Gaza.

A senior Hamas official told Reuters on Sunday that Alexander would be released in Gaza soon, a move mediators Egypt and Qatar described as "encouraging" for a return to ceasefire talks in the war-ravaged territory.

Meanwhile, US Special Envoy Adam Boehler said Sunday evening that Washington is currently working to recover the bodies of four additional US citizens believed to have been killed while in captivity in the Gaza Strip.

The Jerusalem Post quoted Boehler as saying that Washington is currently conducting additional negotiations with Hamas to recover the bodies of four detainees killed in the Gaza Strip.

"The moves are being coordinated with international mediators, amid growing pressure to return the remains of its citizens held in Gaza," Buhler added.

This came after the Palestinian movement announced earlier Sunday its intention to release Israeli-American soldier Idan Alexander, following contacts it had with the US administration over the past few days.

Hamas said in a statement that it had "contacted the US administration over the past few days, and the movement expressed great positivity, and that the Israeli-American soldier Idan Alexander will be released."

She added that this comes "as part of the steps taken to cease fire, open the crossings, and allow aid and relief to reach our people in the Gaza Strip."

This development comes ahead of US President Donald Trump's regional tour, which will include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, from Tuesday to Friday.

Tel Aviv estimates that there are 59 Israeli detainees in Gaza, 21 of whom are still alive. Meanwhile, more than 9,900 Palestinians are languishing in its prisons, suffering torture, starvation, and medical neglect, many of whom have died, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports.

In early March, the first phase of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, which had been in effect since January 19, ended. However, Israel reneged on the agreement and resumed its genocide on the 18th of the same month.

Since March 2, it has also blocked the entry of relief, food, and medical aid into the Gaza Strip, on which the 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza are entirely dependent after the ongoing genocide has rendered them impoverished, according to World Bank data.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has continued its widespread war of extermination against the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip, including killing, destruction, starvation, and forced displacement, ignoring international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

This US-backed war left more than 172,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing.
