Trump's Middle East envoy: A ceasefire and a long-term solution in Gaza are possible

"We are close to presenting a document of understandings that is supposed to be presented today to President Trump for review, and I feel that a ceasefire and a long-term solution to the conflict in Gaza is possible," Witkoff said in an Oval Office statement on Wednesday.

In turn, Trump, who was present in the Oval Office, said he warned Netanyahu against taking countermeasures that would disrupt the nuclear talks with Iran.

He stated that they are comprehensively studying the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and that negotiations on Iran are also proceeding well.

Hamas announced on Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on a general framework for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange in the Gaza Strip, pending a final response from mediators.

The movement said in a statement: "We are making great efforts to stop the barbaric war on the Gaza Strip, the latest of which was reaching an agreement with US envoy Steve Witkoff on a general framework that would achieve a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, and the flow of aid."

However, an official Israeli source rushed on Wednesday to deny Hamas's announcement that it had reached a preliminary agreement with Witkov on a prisoner exchange deal. He claimed that the proposal was "unacceptable" to Tel Aviv and Washington, according to statements made to Hebrew media outlets, including Yedioth Ahronoth.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with full American support, has been waging a genocidal war in Gaza, leaving approximately 177,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, more than 11,000 missing, and hundreds of thousands displaced.
