Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement on Telegram on Tuesday that the Russian military launched a missile and drone attack overnight on the capital, Kyiv, and the cities of Odessa, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr, Kirovograd, and Zaporizhia.
Zelensky explained that the Russian military attacked Kyiv with more than 440 drones and 32 missiles, describing it as "one of the most horrific attacks on the capital."
He said the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 15 civilians and the injury of 75, noting that material damage occurred in eight different areas of the capital, Kyiv, and that efforts to rescue people from under the rubble are underway.
He denounced the international community's "ignorance of Russian terrorist attacks" on his country, asserting that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the war to continue.
He later said in a post on the X platform: "Kyiv is facing one of the most horrific attacks. We are in contact with all our partners at all possible levels to ensure an appropriate response. It is the terrorists who should feel the pain, not innocent people."
"Explosions are being heard in Kyiv," the Ukrainian TV channel Obshchestvennoye said in a Telegram post, according to Russia Today news website.
For its part, the Ukrainian newspaper Strana reported that large fires broke out in the Darnytskyi and Solomyansky districts of the capital, Kyiv.
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has launched a military attack on its neighbor, Ukraine, and has demanded that Kyiv abandon its membership in Western military entities as a condition for ending the offensive. Kyiv considers this to be "interference" in its affairs.
