Germany, one of Israel's closest allies in Europe, is increasingly looking to tap into Israel's defense expertise as it bolsters its military capabilities and NATO contributions in the face of perceived growing threats from Russia and China.
"Military defense alone is not enough at this security juncture. It is also necessary to carry out a major modernization of civil defense to strengthen our comprehensive defense capabilities," Dobrindt was quoted as saying by the German newspaper Bild during a visit to Israel.
Dobrindt arrived in Israel on a surprise visit on Saturday and is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials.
According to Bild, Dobrindt outlined a five-point plan aimed at establishing what he called a "cyber dome" for Germany as part of its cyber defense strategy.
Earlier on Sunday, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder called for the acquisition of 2,000 interceptor missiles to equip Germany with the Iron Dome system, similar to Israeli defense technology for intercepting short-range missiles.
The German government has pursued a policy of comprehensive, political, economic, and military support for Israel since October 7, 2023, without reservation.
