Liverpool officially sign Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen

English Premier League club Liverpool officially announced the recruitment of Florian Wirtz from German Premier League team Bayer Leverkusen on a contract said to be long-term.

Wirtz is the second player Liverpool have signed from Leverkusen this season, after they brought in Jeremie Frimpong at the end of last month.

"Writz, the 22-year-old playmaker , has signed a long-term contract with the Reds after agreeing personal terms and successfully passing a medical,"

Shortly after signing his contract, Wirtz said he was very proud to wear the Liverpool uniform, which won its 20th Premier League title last season.

"I feel very happy and proud. It's finally done and I've been waiting for it for a long time, it's finally done and I'm really happy. I'm really excited to start this new adventure ahead of me. It was also at the heart of my mind, that I wanted to do something completely new, to get out of the Bundesliga and join the Premier League," said the German international.

Wirtz arrives at Anfield after five-and-a-half successful seasons with Leverkusen after moving from Cologne's youth system.

After making his Bundesliga debut in May 2020 at the age of 17 years and 15 days, Wirtz then scored his first senior goal a few weeks later against Bayern Munich.

His debut for the German national team came in September 2021, but a serious injury he suffered the following March kept him out for several months.

However, Wirtz was again in sparkling form as Leverkusen won the domestic double, the German Bundesliga and German Cup in the 2023/2024 season without losing.

Although Leverkusen failed to repeat last season's trophy success, Wirtz continued to show his incredible quality by still scoring double figures in goals (16 goals) and 15 assists for the team nicknamed Die Werkself from 45 games in all competitions.
