51,000 martyrs and wounded in the education sector since the beginning of the genocide... and the United Nations is concerned about Israel expanding its operations in Gaza.

Palestinian media reported that an Israeli airstrike destroyed an UNRWA clinic housing displaced persons in the Maqousi area, west of Gaza City, at dawn on Wednesday.

In a related context, official Palestinian data indicates that more than 51,000 students and teaching staff at Palestinian schools and universities have been killed or injured since the start of the genocide in the Gaza Strip.

A statistical report published by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education on Tuesday, covering the period from the beginning of the Israeli war of extermination in Gaza on October 7, 2023, to August 5, indicated that the total number of martyrs reached 18,685 Palestinians, including students and teaching staff, while the total number of injured reached 32,382.

152 schools in the occupied West Bank were vandalized, and 25 schools, along with their students and teachers, were removed from the education register, according to the same data.

Regarding violations against school students, data indicated that 16,493 students were killed, including 16,385 in the Gaza Strip and 108 in the West Bank. The number of injured students reached 25,132, including 2,440 in the Gaza Strip and the rest in the West Bank, where 370 arrests were also recorded.

Regarding university students, data indicated that 1,240 were killed, including 1,205 in Gaza, and 2,732 were injured, including 2,051 in the Strip.

Regarding Israeli violations against educational personnel, Palestinian data confirmed the martyrdom of 730 school personnel (teachers and administrators), including 725 from Gaza, and the injury of 3,101, including 3,080 in Gaza.

Israel also killed 222 university faculty members, all of them in the Gaza Strip, and injured 1,434, including 1,417 in the Gaza Strip and the rest in the West Bank.

Regarding attacks on schools and universities, data indicated that Israel completely destroyed more than 150 government schools, damaged 118 others, and bombed and vandalized 93 UNRWA schools. Regarding universities, data confirmed the complete destruction of more than 60 university buildings in Gaza, and that eight universities in the West Bank were stormed and vandalized.

In the West Bank, data indicated that 152 schools were vandalized, and 25 schools, along with their students and teachers, were removed from the educational register. These schools were mostly located in communities whose residents were forced to leave due to attacks by Israeli settlers.

International concern over the occupation of Gaza

The United Nations has expressed grave concern about the possibility of Israel expanding its military operations to include the entire Gaza Strip, noting that this would lead to disastrous consequences for millions of Palestinians.

This came in a speech delivered by Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, on Tuesday during a UN Security Council session on the situation of prisoners, convened at Israel's request.

Jenca noted that the situation in Gaza has become horrific and unbearable, noting that Palestinians are subjected to miserable and inhumane conditions on a daily basis. He added, "Since the end of May, more than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed and more than 8,100 others injured while trying to obtain food, including near aid distribution points under military control."

Jenca noted that the number of martyrs and wounded continues to rise, that there are no signs of an end to the suffering, and that Israel continues to impose severe restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He noted the widespread famine in Gaza, emphasizing that they must be protected and not be targeted or deliberately deprived of access to food, as doing so constitutes a war crime.

He stressed the need for Israel to immediately allow the rapid, unimpeded, and adequate passage of humanitarian aid to civilians. He warned, "The possibility of Israel expanding its military operations to include the entire Gaza Strip is deeply worrying and could lead to catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians."

Jenca emphasized that a military solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not possible. He continued, "We must establish political and security frameworks that will mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, initiate early recovery and reconstruction, address the legitimate security concerns of Israelis and Palestinians, end the illegal Israeli occupation, and ensure a sustainable two-state solution."

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a war of genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The genocide, with American support, left more than 211,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and a famine that claimed the lives of many, including dozens of children.

In parallel with the genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army and settlers escalated their attacks in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,013 Palestinians, the injury of approximately 7,000, and the arrest of more than 18,500, according to Palestinian data.
