Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz led the establishment of the Migrant and Deportation Assistance Board, which will coordinate with the state government to assist people in transit.
The main objective is "to be organized for any eventuality that may arise; the immigration issue in Tijuana is a daily occurrence, and we have managed, in coordination with the state and the Federation, to move forward in this naturally occurring dynamic," said Burgueño Ruiz, according to a press release.
The session took place within the framework of International Migrants Day; the meeting was held in response to a point of agreement proposed at the recent City Council meeting by the president of the Commission on Human Rights, Migration, and Indigenous Affairs, Sandra Betsaida Magaña Ríos—who expressed her gratitude for the attention to the call—in which the Secretariat of Welfare was urged to design a municipal strategy to monitor and address the issue.
The mayor emphasized the importance of taking action to address these groups, given their vulnerability, "as a responsibility shared by everyone, with each individual acting within their own sphere of expertise," the statement said.
