Mexico City, July 31.—“Well, I'm going to give them the remedy and the rag: the Judiciary contributes half of what it has saved (to finance the election of its members). Let them help if it's a reform to improve the Judiciary. They have about 20 billion pesos saved. Of course, it's enough, even with less than half. The money is there,” affirmed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, referring to the National Electoral Institute's estimates on the cost of electing judges, magistrates, and ministers.
During his speech, he stated that the lack of resources to finance the election cannot be used as an excuse because "this is not an expense, it's an investment." Justice is a priority. Imagine how much revenue is lost due to the scams in the judiciary if we only have 13 cases... that have been going on for 150 days on average, almost half a year, and the judges, magistrates, and ministers have not resolved them! We're waiting because the ministers return from vacation tomorrow and have some pending matters there."
That's why the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers is important, although it will take time, but "we're already on a safe path." It can be resolved by the first quarter of next year; elections can be called as early as next year, if not for all of them, then for half of the members, and we'll be moving forward."
He believed that this will help a lot, although not everything in the judiciary is rotten. There are judges, magistrates, and ministers who are incorruptible, independent, who seek to dispense justice, who participate as candidates, so that no one is disqualified. Let the people decide. Just as mayors, federal representatives, senators, and governors are elected, they won't resist, and a judge, a magistrate, or a minister will not be elected.
