Burgueño assesses fire damage; 2 deaths, 94 homes burned, and hundreds affected

Tijuana, January 24. In just over a week, during three periods of Santa Ana winds that affected the region - from January 15 to 23 - 248 fires were attended to, of which 80 occurred in just 24 hours, leaving a balance of two people dead, hundreds homeless and 94 burned homes, including the 30 consumed in the Leandro Valle neighborhood and its border with Xochimilco.

Following a meeting of the Civil Protection Committee in which the damage caused by the winds was assessed, Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz reported that they are addressing the situation and the affected people. He highlighted the work of the firefighters who rescued a nine-day-old baby and his family on Thursday, among all the work they performed.

Fire Director Rafael Carrillo Venegas reported that among the 248 fires, one that consumed 30 homes stands out, as well as one that burned a platform. He also reported the support they provided to their counterparts in Tecate to extinguish another blaze in the vicinity of the municipality.

For his part, the head of Civil Protection, José Luis Jiménez, explained that the low humidity and wind gusts that reached up to 86 kilometers per hour in the Leandro Valle neighborhood contributed to the conditions experienced, which even led the City Council to declare a "state of alarm" to access the necessary resources and actions to address them.
