Cholera case detected in Mexicali patient; outbreak ruled out

Mexicali, July 5. State Health Secretary José Adrián Medina Amarillas confirmed that a patient with cholera who was infected in Baja California Sur was detected in Mexicali, and ruled out any risk of an outbreak in the state.

He explained that the person's contacts were reviewed and it was determined that there was no risk of an outbreak. Since the case was detected, a health lockdown was established.

"We have established that there is no risk of an outbreak from this case, which was imported from Baja California Sur," he said, adding that the type of bacteria detected in the Mexicali resident is non-fatal.

"The person is recovering, and we hope to be discharged soon," he said.

Cholera is a bacterial disease, usually transmitted through water, that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration.

The disease is fatal if not treated immediately, according to specialists.
