Fighting fentanyl from the classroom: SEP

The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) will promote the National Strategy to Prevent Fentanyl and Amphetamine Use. The measure will initially be implemented in 40,963 public and private secondary schools nationwide, in 10- to 15-minute sessions at least three days a week.

Teachers and administrators at that educational level described the initiative as "positive." In a second phase, the SEP announced, it could be implemented in high school campuses to raise awareness about the serious harm caused by the use of these illicit drugs.

The strategy is being announced in the context of agreements signed between the governments of Mexico and the United States to combat fentanyl addiction, which causes thousands of deaths in the neighboring country. Among other actions, this includes launching a binational public health campaign to reduce the risks associated with its use and that of other drugs.

The use of this synthetic opioid has become a relevant bilateral issue. Last Thursday, a delegation of high-level White House officials met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the National Palace to discuss, among other topics, the "havoc" caused by this drug.
