Former Pemex director's arrest in the US was immigration-related: lawyer

Tijuana, August 14.- Former CEO of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Carlos Alberto Treviño Medina, was detained in the United States for immigration reasons, not for extradition purposes, as was announced during the morning press conference at the National Palace, according to his lawyer, Oscar Zamudio.

"The arrest was strictly for immigration reasons and has nothing to do with any type of request from the Mexican State for any conduct related to a crime."

In an interview with La Jornada, he reiterated that the information "provided to the president is inaccurate in that regard, because the detention was actually carried out by an immigration authority to review the immigration status and will also be subject to scrutiny by a United States judge specializing in the matter."

The legal representative recalled that his client requested political asylum in the neighboring country (which he has not obtained). In August 2023, the International Police (Interpol) canceled the former official's Red Notice of Search and Arrest, considering that his human rights and the right to defense had been violated by the Attorney General's Office (FGR), which accused him of receiving bribes totaling more than 4 million pesos for awarding a contract to an Odebrecht subsidiary to build the so-called Ethylene XXI project.
