The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) index stated on its website that more than one million Palestinians in Gaza face severe food insecurity, noting that famine has spread to the Gaza Strip (north) and will extend to Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis in the central and southern Gaza Strip by next September.
In response, the Israeli military claimed in a statement that "there are fundamental gaps in the facts and methodology, the use of biased and self-interested sources of information linked to Hamas, and a lack of basic accuracy and a change in criteria that undermine the report's credibility."
He also claimed that "the ranking is based on unpublished telephone surveys, dubious estimates by UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), and local NGOs."
For its part, Hamas said in a statement on Friday that " what the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report announced regarding the spread of famine in Gaza represents damning international evidence of the crime committed by the occupation."
She added that the occupation's denial of the existence of famine in Gaza "reveals a criminal mentality that deliberately lies to cover up the crime of murder by starving children, women, and the sick."
