The observatory explained that approximately 514,000 people in Gaza, nearly a quarter of the population, are suffering from famine, and it expects the number to exceed 640,000 by the end of September.
The UN-backed body, which includes 21 humanitarian organizations and UN agencies, confirmed that Gaza City residents are already living in a state of famine that could spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis within weeks.
The report noted that a lack of data and access restrictions prevented the classification of the situation in North Gaza Governorate, and that Rafah, which has become almost empty of residents, was excluded.
For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the famine in Gaza as a "man-made disaster," stressing that it cannot be allowed to continue with impunity.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher stressed that the famine could have been prevented "had Israel not systematically obstructed aid access," calling on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately allow "large-scale and unhindered" access for food and humanitarian supplies.
