No authority may detain a migrant and present him or her to immigration authorities: DMAM

Tijuana, September 6.- The 24th Tijuana City Council warned people in the mobility context that no authority at any level of government may detain a migrant and present them to immigration authorities.

The head of the Municipal Directorate for Migrant Assistance (DMAM), Enrique Lucero Vázquez, reported that to date, the Office of the Attorney General has not referred any citizen complaints, with or without protection, to the municipal government regarding this act prohibited by the Immigration Law.

Lucero Vázquez emphasized that in immigration matters, municipal officials are allies in providing support and assistance to people in situations of mobility, as migrants arriving at the checkpoints are guided by agents to the offices of this 24th City Council to receive the necessary assistance.

The official stated that in the case of unaccompanied children and adolescents, officers provide assistance and transfer them to the offices of the Office of the Attorney for the Defense of Minors. As in the case of the El Chaparral camp, they were responsible for protecting them during the three months that the municipal authorities intervened.
