US sugar producers demand a 44% reduction in imports from Mexico

The American Sugar Coalition has demanded that the administration led by Democrat Joe Biden reduce Mexican sugar imports to the United States by 44 percent.

According to a Bloomberg report, the group sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo arguing that "Mexico's exports during the current export curfew already exceed the amount that country can supply from its surplus production."

The American Sugar Coalition's members include the American Sugar Cane League, the American Sugarbeet Growers Association, the American Sugar Refining Association, and the Florida Sugar Cane League. Specifically, these organizations are calling for limiting imports from Mexico to less than 500,000 tons, down from the current figure of nearly 900,000 tons.

The Department of Commerce will investigate

As a background, it's worth noting that Mexican sugar production fell last season, but shipments to the United States continued.
