China launches 3-year action plan for new energy storage

China announced an action plan to promote the development of new forms of energy storage for 2025 to 2027 as it seeks to support the green energy transition and ensure the stability of the new type of power system.

The country plans to achieve an installed capacity of new energy storage of over 180 million kilowatts by 2027, which is expected to drive direct project investment of 250 billion yuan (1 yuan = Rp2,311) or about US$35.2 billion (US$1 = Rp16,468), according to a plan jointly released by China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration.

The plan outlines 21 key measures, including expanding the application of energy storage in power generation and grid infrastructure, accelerating technological innovation, and enhancing standardization. It also emphasizes talent development and strengthening international cooperation in the sector.

This is part of China's broader efforts to achieve a green and low-carbon energy transition and high-quality economic and social development.

It is based on significant growth in the sector. By the end of 2024, China's installed capacity of new energy storage had reached 73.76 million kilowatts, according to official data.
