As night falls, a large number of drones roar on a circular track, while inside an exhibition hall, humanoid robots run, overtake each other, and engage in fierce competition.
At the 2025 World Smart Industry Expo in Chongqing, several technology-themed sports competitions captured the public's attention.
In recent years, driven by rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and drone technology, sports have evolved beyond traditional tests of strength and speed. The integration of technology and sports has led to the emergence of new event formats, industrial supply chains, and consumer experiences.
The second Chongqing Drone Racing Competition, held from September 5th to 7th, featured a variety of drones capable of speeds exceeding 200 km/h while navigating sharp turns, tunnels, and obstacle courses. A total of 130 elite pilots from various countries demonstrated their speed, precision, and intelligent control.
"The track design in Chongqing is extraordinary, requiring both technical skill and mental toughness from the pilots," said Kim Min-jae, a junior world champion from South Korea.
With the rapid growth of the drone industry, racing events are expanding worldwide. This year's Chongqing competition featured four categories: Open, Junior, Women's, and Team, and attracted two million viewers both on-site and online.
At 11 years old, Chinese drone pilot Qi Jingxi demonstrated impressive drone control skills. "Drone racing is so much fun. It's like playing a video game in the real world, but it requires much more in-depth knowledge and skills," she said. "Through the competition, I learned about drone programming and maintenance, made friends from both home and abroad, and improved my physics and mathematics skills."
