Mexicali, May 6, “I can assure you that the Municipal Police are not protecting any criminal activity ,” said Julián Leyzaola Pérez, head of the Municipal Public Security Directorate (DSPM).
He mentioned that since he arrived at the corporation a month and a half ago, all police commanders have been out on the streets to supervise operational work.
Leyzaola Pérez declined to elaborate on rumors that surfaced several months ago, when there were allegations that municipal agents had ties to "Los Rusos ," a cell of the Sinaloa Cartel.
"I don't know if there was one, but if we suspect someone, we've changed their name , and other cases are being evaluated and referred to the authorities," he said.
He said the recent bodies found in the municipality are likely those of people murdered several weeks ago.
"Those who are appearing are being taken out of the city. If the criminals move around the city, there's a high risk of running into a unit," he said.
The Director of Municipal Public Safety emphasized that there is a saying that no criminal group can grow without the support of authorities, which is why he is working to clean up the corporation .
Regarding the handling of high-impact crimes, he said he is working on creating a unit with specialized equipment to handle them.
