European football's governing body UEFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings regarding the incident that occurred at the end of Liverpool's match against Atletico Madrid, which ended with a score of 3–2 for the Reds.
The match escalated into chaos after Atletico coach Diego Simeone was shown a red card. Virgil van Dijk's winning goal in stoppage time sparked a commotion on the touchline.
Simeone was seen making gestures towards the crowd behind the bench and had to be restrained and pushed away from the crowd before being sent off by the referee.
According to a report by The Athletic, UEFA has filed charges against both Simeone and Liverpool. Simeone faces a ban from field-side supervision, while Liverpool could be fined for the fan disturbances.
If serious violations are found, UEFA can even impose sanctions of closing part of the stadium.
After the match, Simeone apologized for his reaction, but also demanded an investigation into the behavior of Liverpool fans, whom he accused of "relentless abuse."
Footage on social media showed bottles being thrown towards the stands, while Atletico are also investigating allegations a coaching staff member spat at a fan involved.
