Ayumu Sano hands Tagacanao his first defeat, taking out the WBA Asia champion

Japanese boxer Ayumu Sano inflicted his first defeat on Reymart Tagacanao and claimed the World Boxing Association (WB) Asia super flyweight (52.1 kg) title at the Bishkek Arena, Kyrgyzstan.

"The judges' scorecards showed 17-111, 119-109, and 120-108, all for Sano, who showed complete control throughout the twelve rounds," the WBA reported on its official website, which was monitored in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sano executed a brilliant tactical game plan from the opening bell. With sharp footwork, precise distance control, and accurate counterpunching, Sano effectively neutralized Tagacanao's knockout power.

Entering the ring on a run of eight straight knockouts, Tagacanao tried to force the tempo early on, but Sano's consistent jab and body movement began to wear him down in the third round.

From the fourth round on, he dominated the center of the ring, cutting corners and landing sharp, clean punches every time the Filipino launched an attack.

Despite showing considerable courage and spirit, Tagacanao struggled to mount a sustained attack. His punches frequently missed, while Sano's composure and accuracy continued to widen the gap as the round progressed.

Towards the end of the fight, Sano maintained control, avoided unnecessary exchanges, and closed the fight with authority. The 22-year-old's composure, ring intelligence, and disciplined execution were key to securing a unanimous decision victory.

The fight result marked a breakthrough moment for Sano, who is now on the international radar in one of boxing's most competitive divisions with a record of 11 wins (5 KOs) and 1 draw.

His team has expressed interest in pursuing the WBA International title in 2026 as part of a plan to progress towards a world title shot.

For Tagacanao, the loss that broke his undefeated record to 11 wins (9 KOs) and 1 loss was a setback, but not the end of the road.

At 26, he still possesses potent knockout power and the potential to bounce back with improved tactics and valuable international experience.
