Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Japan Open ahead of her quarter-final match on Friday after the four-time Grand Slam champion failed to recover from a foot injury.
The former world number one was in tears after a hard-fought last-16 match against defending champion Suzan Lamens in Osaka on Wednesday (15/10).
"We regret to announce that Naomi Osaka has not recovered from the left foot injury she suffered in the second round of this tournament and has withdrawn from the quarterfinals scheduled for today," the tournament organizers wrote on their X account.
