China's cyber authority said on Friday (11/14) that it was cracking down on the use of deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence (AI) to impersonate public figures in e-commerce activities through live broadcasts, targeting false propaganda and online violations.
The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said in a statement that authorities have recently severely cracked down on online accounts that used AI to impersonate celebrities to promote products in live broadcasts and short videos, misleading users.
The regulator said online platforms have been asked to carry out a cleanup, which has so far removed more than 8,700 pieces of unlawful content and dealt with more than 11,000 impersonating accounts.
Cyberspace authorities will maintain a firm stance, continue to hold platforms accountable, and address and expose malicious marketing accounts to maintain a positive online environment, the administration added.
