Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi) Nezar Patria said the AI Center of Excellence at Gadjah Mada University will be a driving force for national research to support Indonesia's digital economy.
He explained that Indonesia's digital economy is projected to be worth US$366 billion by 2030. Therefore, the AI Center of Excellence is a crucial foundation for Indonesia's ability to produce relevant innovations ready for use in strategic sectors.
"The establishment of the AI Center of Excellence at Gadjah Mada University is one form of collaboration we've been hoping for. We greatly appreciate Telkom's support for the establishment of the AI Center of Excellence at UGM," Nezar said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.
He said that the recently signed collaboration between UGM and Telkom presents a collaboration model that Indonesia needs to strengthen research capacity and develop artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that can address real-world problems.
UGM's AI Center of Excellence is expected to become a hub for learning, research, and innovation in artificial intelligence . Nezar believes this role is crucial to supporting Indonesia's contribution to Southeast Asia's digital economy, which is projected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030.
Indonesia is predicted to contribute 40 percent of this value, making research and innovation capabilities an urgent need.
"This AI Center can be a hub for AI learning, research, and the creation of useful innovations. It can provide artificial intelligence -based solutions to address some of the problems we face today," said Nezar.
