Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria highlighted the role of artificial intelligence ( AI) as a crucial breakthrough in addressing the rise of human trafficking in the digital space. He emphasized that technology must be a solution for human protection, not a source of new threats.
"AI technology has been misused as a key driver of human trafficking. Therefore, we need to ensure that AI is developed ethically, respects human rights, prioritizes personal data protection, and complies with local legal and social norms," said Deputy Minister Nezar Patria in an official statement.
He also conveyed this message at the forum “Stay Safe in Digital Space: Behind the Screen – Trafficking is Closer Than You Think” held by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Jakarta, Tuesday (04/11), where in front of international delegates, cybersecurity experts, and representatives of UN agencies, Deputy Minister Nezar explained that human trafficking patterns have shifted to the digital space.
Social media, online job sites, and dating platforms have now become tools for recruitment and exploitation of victims by transnational perpetrators.
"This shift presents new challenges for law enforcement. The massive volume of data can no longer be handled with manual approaches, necessitating AI-based automated analysis capabilities," he explained.
