Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir stated that a pension fund for accomplished athletes, who are today's sports heroes, is being prepared to be implemented as a form of government attention to athletes who have brought honor to Indonesia.
"We are currently working on (a pension fund for high-achieving athletes) and perhaps next year, once we have a formula, we can push for it," said Erick Thohir in an interview in Jakarta on Monday.
He conveyed this in response to ANTARA's question regarding the meaning of the commemoration of Heroes' Day on November 10 for the development of the sports sector in Also read: Minister of Youth and Sports seeks to implement pension funds for high-achieving athletes
The Minister of Youth and Sports said that today's national heroes are among those born from the world of sports through athletes who have achieved success and raised the Red and White flag on the international stage.
He said the contributions of accomplished athletes as modern-day heroes should not be forgotten. He continued, "When athletes are winning medals, they are lauded, but there is no guarantee of their well-being after retirement."
"Well, that's why we're investigating how the pension funds I mentioned were made public in Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives," he said.
