Scientists reached this conclusion after analyzing data from dozens of previous studies, the results of which showed that beetroot supplements improve, in most cases, the body's endurance and muscle efficiency, and also contribute to accelerating recovery after exercise, especially in people who are not used to exercising regularly.
Researchers attribute these benefits to the nitric oxide found in beets, which dilates blood vessels, increasing blood flow to muscles and reducing the tissues' need for oxygen during physical activity. As a result, feelings of fatigue decrease and movement efficiency improves—an effect that is particularly important for adults and older adults, whose physical reserves gradually decline with age.
As for brain function, the results were less clear. Some studies showed slight improvements in attention, reaction time, and certain memory indicators after consuming beetroot juice, but researchers emphasized that conclusive evidence of its lasting cognitive effects is still insufficient. However, they noted that improved blood flow may potentially support brain function, especially when combined with a healthy diet and physical activity.
The study authors noted that beetroot supplements may represent a safe and cost-effective option that can be included in healthy aging strategies to promote physical fitness and support overall health as people age.
