sleeping position on health.A doctor explains the effect of sleeping position on health.
The doctor pointed out that sleeping on the stomach is not recommended for pregnant women , even in the early stages of pregnancy, as the pressure on the abdomen can negatively affect the fetus. For infants , the risks are even greater, as this position is linked to the risk of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS ), due to their inability to move their heads independently. Sleeping on the stomach is also prohibited after surgery , because pressure on the wound area hinders healing and increases the risk of complications. Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor to determine a safe sleeping position in such cases.
Dr. Parashkin added that even healthy adults who sleep on their stomachs face risks, as the 90-degree head rotation strains the neck muscles, causing stiffness and pain in the neck and back in the morning. The arms can also become numb, especially when placed under the pillow or raised, which can compress the nerves in the shoulder area and cause temporary loss of sensation.
To reduce these negative effects, the doctor advised using a mattress and pillow that adapt to the shape of the body , which reduces pressure on the spine and contributes to a more comfortable and safer sleep.
