The European Commission announced that Meta will allow Facebook and Instagram users in the European Union to choose to share less data and see fewer personalized ads on the platforms.
Engadget reported on Tuesday that according to a European Commission announcement the policy will come into effect in January 2026.
"This is the first time such an option has been offered on the Meta social network," the European Commission said in a statement.
The European Commission said that Meta would give users an effective choice between agreeing to share all their data and getting fully personalized ads or choosing to share less data to get an experience with more limited ad personalization.
The new policy was announced after the European Commission imposed a fine of 200 million euros (approximately Rp3.8 trillion) on Meta regarding the offer of ad-free subscription packages in the European Union, which the regulator said used a "deal or pay" scheme.
