NBA sanctions Suns and Pelicans players
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has suspended Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams and New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado for their involvement in an on-court brawl during the 2025-2026 NBA season.

The NBA website said Monday that Alvarado was suspended for two games without pay, while Williams was suspended for one game without pay, after the sanctions were announced by Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations James Jones.

The altercation occurred with 2 minutes and 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Suns' 123-114 victory over the Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center on December 27.

The altercation began when Alvarado committed a defensive foul on Williams.

In response, Williams pushed Alvarado from behind, escalating the situation.

The two players were involved in a physical altercation on the field, including throwing punches at each other, before being separated by officials and their respective teammates.

As a result of the incident, Alvarado and Williams were both given technical fouls and were immediately ejected from the game.

The NBA considers the two players' actions to be in violation of league rules regarding sportsmanship and player safety.

Jose Alvarado served his suspension on December 30 when the Pelicans hosted the New York Knicks, and  when his team visited the Chicago Bulls.

Meanwhile, Mark Williams served a one-game suspension on December 30, when the Phoenix Suns faced the Washington Wizards.

The NBA affirms its commitment to maintaining order and professionalism on the court through consistent enforcement of discipline.
