Political observer and Executive Director of the Indonesia Political Review (IPR), Iwan Setiawan, said the government needs to take a firm yet persuasive response to the phenomenon of raising the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) flag to prevent past trauma.
According to him, this approach is crucial to maintaining stability in Aceh, because peace in Aceh is the result of a long and expensive process, so any symbols, narratives, and provocations that lead to separatism can harm the commitment to peace.
"Maintaining peace means closing all space for the revival of symbols of past conflict," Iwan said .
He considered that raising the flag was a form of provocation against the community.
He suspected that a number of individuals had exploited the flash flood and landslide disasters to incite the public to believe that the government was ignoring the suffering of the Acehnese people in the midst of an emergency situation.
