Hundreds of residents of RW 013, Pondok Kelapa Village, Duren Sawit District, East Jakarta, forcibly dismantled the zinc fence that enclosed the Temporary Waste Disposal Site (TPS), which had long been used by residents but was now claimed to belong to another party.
"This land has been used by residents as a TPS (pollution control) for more than 30 years. But it has been fenced off again by those claiming to be the owners. This is the second time," said Siswo Harsono, a resident of RW 013 Pondok Kelapa in East Jakarta, Sunday.
The forced demolition action was triggered by residents' disappointment because they could no longer dispose of waste at the TPS which they had shared for decades.
The TPS location was fenced off by a party claiming to be the legal owner of the land, so that residents' waste disposal activities were stopped.
Siswo explained that the problem of fencing the TPS land had actually been going on for a long time and had now recurred for the second time.
According to him, the fencing causes residents' rubbish to pile up and disrupts environmental cleanliness.
Residents, along with RW administrators and community leaders, tried to negotiate to have part of the fence dismantled, but the owner refused.
"Residents have tried to negotiate for the owners to dismantle the landfill themselves, but they refused. They promised a meeting tomorrow, but the garbage collection cannot be postponed," he said.
Siswo added that the sub-district office had also offered an alternative landfill site. However, residents deemed the location's capacity inadequate to accommodate the substantial amount of waste from RW 013.
"Residents hope this TPS will remain operational. Regarding ownership and the legal process, please proceed, as we've heard the local government is also in the process of purchasing this land," said Siswo.
