In an interview with the Russian website "360.RU", the expert said: "Scammers and internet pirates have started using new methods of online fraud, relying on electronic games and competitions such as the game (Secret Santa)."
The expert explained that the principle behind these games seems simple and appealing, as it involves exchanging gifts for holidays and the New Year, with promises of attractive prizes. However, people's preoccupation with preparations and their lack of caution lead them to try their luck, whether to receive gifts themselves or to send them to relatives and friends, making them easy prey for online scams .
She added that participants in such games often transfer money to fraudulent accounts or enter fake competitions, only to end up losing money without receiving any prizes or gifts in return.
The expert pointed out that many users receive links via messaging apps or websites, accompanied by offers to win New Year's gifts. Users are often asked to click the link and enter their bank card details, and once this is done, the device is compromised or the stored banking information is stolen.
She emphasized the importance of avoiding clicking on any links from unknown sources and not entering any personal or banking information through untrusted websites. She also advised relying only on well-known companies and organizations when sending gifts during the holidays, and carefully verifying the credibility of any website or service before sharing payment details or sensitive information.
