ECOWAS is reducing air taxes to lower the cost of flights

Meeting in Abuja in December 2025, the region's heads of state approved the removal of several air transport taxes and a 25% reduction in passenger and security costs.

These measures will come into force on January 1, 2026.

For years, West African aviation was hampered by too many taxes and fees. According to regional and international studies, passengers can sometimes pay up to 66 different fees, and airlines more than 100 taxes. A situation which penalizes travel, tourism and trade.

The new law adopted by ECOWAS aims to align the region with international standards and revive the sector. The expected effects: cheaper tickets, increased traffic, strengthened companies and more economic opportunities.

Member States will have to adapt their legislation, while airlines are invited to pass these reductions on to travelers. ECOWAS will establish a monitoring mechanism and support other initiatives, such as joint maintenance facilities and harmonized safety standards.
