Iran is reassessing its fuel prices to control costs

Iran introduced a new tariff tier for subsidized gasoline on Saturday, marking the first significant revision since 2019.

Motorists now benefit from 60 liters per month at a rate of 15,000 rials per liter, the next 100 liters at 30,000 rials, and any additional quantity at 50,000 rials.

Despite this increase, prices remain among the lowest in the world. The International Energy Agency estimates Iranian oil subsidies at $52 billion in 2022. Economists warn of their impact on inflation and the already high budget deficit.

The previous increase in 2019 triggered demonstrations in more than a hundred cities, repressed with at least 321 deaths according to Amnesty International. The government hopes that the new structure will moderate fuel consumption while financing public needs.

Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said prices would be revised every three months, while some citizens doubt further protests could influence government policy.
