The new head coach of the Indonesian national team, John Herdman, called his team the "new Garuda" in an exclusive interview broadcast on the Indonesian national team's YouTube channel on Monday.
Herdman has ambitions to take Indonesia to the next level, playing in the World Cup for the first time in 2030.
It was the centennial edition of the World Cup.
Herdman is very enthusiastic about taking Indonesia there, after Indonesia failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
"It's a big responsibility. I love seeing people grow and develop as teachers, ready to move on to the next level, and you know, hopefully, my legacy will be that I was able to help with that process. This is the new Garuda," Herdman said.
The 50-year-old English coach officially became the coach of the Indonesian national team on Saturday, January 3.
He arrived in Indonesia on Saturday, January 10, three days before being introduced to the public on Tuesday, January 13.
Indonesia is the fifth senior team Herdman has managed, following the New Zealand women's national team, the Canadian women's national team, the Canadian men's national team, and the Toronto FC men's team.
