Nigeria: new tax laws come into force on January 1

In Nigeria, new tax laws will come into force on January 1, 2026 despite calls for postponement, it has been announcedpresident Bola Tinubutuesday.

The head of state has engaged in an overhaul of the Nigerian tax system in recent months. Signed by the president in June 2025, the new laws should help increase the country's revenue and tax efficiency.

In a statement, Bola Tinubu urged the population to support these reforms, presented as one “unique opportunity to build a fair, competitive and solid tax base.”

"Tax laws are not intended to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, promote harmonization and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract", he added.

But the implementation of these measures is the subject of controversy. Opposition parliamentarians claim that the laws published in the official journal include additions never validated by the legislative power. President Tinubu rejected his accusations, emphasizing his commitment to guarantee “the integrity of enacted laws.”
