Vitamin D is an important nutrient for children's health because it facilitates the absorption of calcium, which is essential for strong bones, with the help of sunlight.
As reported by the Hindustan Times on Sunday, Dr. Avi Shah, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon from Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, Mumbai, told Health Shots that winter often makes children deficient in these nutrients because the days are shorter and colder.
“Wearing more clothes and spending more time indoors means they are less exposed to sunlight. Without enough vitamin D, bone health can weaken, which can lead to problems later in life,” he said.
Some specific bone health issues in children can be identified to help with early prevention. Among them, foot and heel pain in children is often misdiagnosed. If the pain occurs frequently, especially after physical activity, it could indicate a child is deficient in essential nutrients, such as vitamin D.
Vitamin D deficiency can also cause muscle weakness and increased fatigue. Children who are normally active may become lethargic, and their muscles may take longer to recover after playing.
Lack of activity and stiff muscles can also make children more likely to experience sprains, muscle injuries, and fractures.
"A minor fall can cause injuries that appear more severe than expected," he said.
