Senegal: Ousmane Sonko rules out debt restructuring

In Senegal, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko says the country will not need to restructure its debt, despite heavy repayment deadlines.

According to the International Monetary Fund, the Senegalese debt reached 132% of GDP at the end of 2024, after billions of dollars of undeclared debt were discovered by the former administration. The IMF has since frozen a $1.8 billion loan program, forcing the country to finance itself on regional markets.

Despite analysts' concerns, Ousmane Sonko assures that the debt remains sustainable and that Senegal has managed to repay it for more than a year. He says the growth and revenue projections have been validated by international partners, including the IMF.

The government recognizes a difficult year, but says it is confident, banking on growth and conclusion quick new agreement with the IMF to stabilize public finances and reassure investors.
