South Africa: the notable absence of the USA during the G20 photo

World leaders from the Group of 20 Rich and Developing Economies posed for a photo on Saturday at the summit in South Africa.

This photo was taken after they adopted a declaration at the start of their summit, despite opposition from the United States who are boycotting the two days of talks due to a diplomatic dispute with the host country.

Vincent Magwenya, spokesman for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, said a leaders' statement was unanimously adopted by other members at the start of discussions in Johannesburg.

Declarations are usually adopted at the end of G20 summits. No details were given on the content of the declaration, but South Africa presented it as a victory for the first G20 summit in Africa and for its aim of placing issues particularly affecting poor countries in top of the agenda.

The summit was overshadowed by the US boycott ordered by President Donald Trump and the United States pressured South Africa not to adopt a leaders' statement in the absence of a US delegation, South African officials said.
