The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is focusing efforts on equalizing internet access to support education, providing equal learning opportunities for students in urban and remote areas.
"In densely populated areas, service quality is relatively stable, while in remote areas, infrastructure strengthening continues," said Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria, as quoted in a ministry press release in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said that internet access is currently available in around 97 percent of populated areas, but the quality of service still varies.
Therefore, the government is trying to gradually improve connectivity and the quality of internet access throughout the region.
"The national average internet speed is around 45 Mbps, still below the Southeast Asian average," Nezar said while receiving representatives from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Office, Central Jakarta, Monday (12/1).
"The government is targeting an increase of up to 100 Mbps in the next three years, including the expansion of the fifth-generation network, which is currently still below 10 percent," he added.
He stated that equalizing internet access for education is part of the state's efforts to fulfill the right to learn and reduce the digital divide.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital is working to ensure students can access online learning platforms properly.
"This support forms the basis for a digital-based education policy," said Nezar.
