Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda since 1986, won the presidential election with 71.65% of the vote, according to the electoral commission. His rival, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, obtained 24.72% of the votes.
This re-election secures Museveni a seventh consecutive term, extending nearly 40 years in power after constitutional amendments removed age and presidential term limits. Before the vote, Internet access was suspended in the country. The UN denounced an electoral climate marked by repression and intimidation.
On the African continent, only Teodoro Obiang Nguema in Equatorial Guinea and Paul Biya in Cameroon have held power longer than Museveni.
