Floods in western France: two dead, 81 departments on alert

After a month of continuous rain, the ground is saturated, and even the slightest rainfall is now enough to cause rivers to overflow. According to Vigicrues, 81 departments and 154 rivers have been placed on alert simultaneously, an unprecedented level of alerts, as there have never been so many simultaneous warnings across so many areas since the creation of a public flood monitoring system in 2006. In the Gironde department, the rising waters have broken records in La Réole and Cadillac, exceeding the flood levels of 2021. A dike broke in Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, flooding the village of Peyrat and forcing the evacuation of about fifty residents. Rail disruptions are affecting Bordeaux, while the Seine has risen four meters in Paris. More rain expected in the Pyrenees raises concerns about flooding downstream, particularly near Agen.
