Janice Tjen defeats Haddad Maia to reach second round of Qatar Open
  Indonesian women's tennis player Janice Tjen defeated Brazilian tennis player Beatrice Haddad Maia in the first round of the Qatar Total Energies Open 2026 in Doha, Monday (9/2) local time or Tuesday morning WIB.

Janice, who received a wildcard into the WTA 1000 event, put on a dominant performance to silence Haddad Maia with a final score of 6-0, 6-1, according to WTA records.

Janice was originally scheduled to face Sorena Cirstea in the first round. However, the 35-year-old withdrew after winning her home WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Haddad Maia then filled the main draw slot, replacing Cirstea as a lucky loser after losing in the qualifying round.

In the first round of the WTA 1000 Doha, Janice started strongly. Using her serve as her primary weapon, Janice served two aces and converted three of her seven break point opportunities to secure the first set.

In the second set, Haddad Maia tried to put up a fight, hitting two aces . However, it wasn't enough to hold off Janice, who dominated on serve.

The 23-year-old Jakarta-born tennis player also played disciplined, as evidenced by his significantly higher return points to pressure his opponent.

Successfully converting two of three break point opportunities in the second set, Janice closed out the match with the loss of only one game after one hour and nine minutes.

The win advanced Janice to the second round in her WTA 1000 debut.

Prior to Doha, Janice recorded a first-round victory in her WTA 500 debut in Abu Dhabi, defeating rising Australian No. 1 Maya Joint after a battle through a set.
