Executive Director of the Indonesian Police Strategic Studies Institute (Lemkapi), Edi Hasibuan, assessed that the meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and National Police Chief General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo was a normal event and not related to the issue of changing the National Police Chief, which is often discussed by the public.
"President Prabowo's meeting with the National Police Chief is a normal meeting between the President as a superior and the National Police Chief as a subordinate regarding developments in public order and security," said Edi in a written statement.
Edi believes that President Prabowo will replace the National Police Chief at the right time and according to him, currently the President has no plans to replace the National Police Chief.
"So far, we believe the President has no plans to replace the National Police Chief until the time comes. The President will certainly make the change when he deems the time appropriate," he said.
The General Chair of the Indonesian Association of Law and Criminology Lecturers (ADIHGI) believes that changing the National Police Chief is not a good idea if it is driven by political pressure, as it has the potential to damage the dignity of the police institution.
"It's not appropriate for the President to replace the National Police Chief under political pressure. This means the National Police must not be dragged into politics. The National Police Chief must not be replaced whenever there's political pressure; that would be very dangerous for the institution," he stressed.
The lecturer at Bhayangkara University Jakarta hopes the President will replace the National Police Chief at the right time and under favorable circumstances. This will also ensure the police force's dignity.
