The Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) has requested that the conflict in Papua be resolved by strengthening human rights.
The Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia has asked the government to prioritize the strengthening of human rights (HAM) in resolving the conflict in Papua to achieve sustainable peace.

Deputy Speaker of the DPD RI, Yorrys Raweyai, stated that Papua has been integrated with the Republic of Indonesia for 70 years, but the problems that arise remain the same and there has been no concrete solution.

"The Regional Representative Council (DPD) believes that resolving the conflict in Papua cannot rely solely on a security approach. Dialogic steps and the protection of human rights are necessary," Yorrys said during a meeting between the DPD and Amnesty International at the parliamentary complex.

During the hearing, the DPD RI agreed to ask the government to stop its militaristic approach and withdraw TNI troops, especially non-organic troops, to prevent the escalation of armed conflict and minimize threats to civilian safety.

He also asked security forces, both the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), to prioritize measured and proportional steps to avoid casualties and trauma for civilians in Papua.

Regarding refugee management, the DPD RI also asked the central government to be more responsive and prioritize the management of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are victims of armed conflict in the Papua region.

The DPD RI also requested that the Central Government support the Papuan government in restoring public service facilities, including strengthening human resources and protecting education and health workers in conflict-affected areas.

"We invite relevant ministries and institutions to hold a joint working meeting with the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) to discuss concrete steps for handling refugees in a comprehensive and coordinated manner," he said.

In addition, the DPD RI also asked the government to stop the National Strategic Project (PSN) in Papua and ensure development that supports the welfare, education, and active involvement of the Papuan people.
