Platform provider X is testing a standalone messaging app called X Chat for iOS.
The company announced that an early beta version of the X Chat app is available to thousands of early users on Apple's TestFlight testing platform, according.
Registration for the beta program tester was reportedly full within just two hours of the announcement.
xAI product designer Michael Boswell said in a post on the X platform that the company will soon expand beta access from the initial 1,000 users to 5,000 users.
"Over the past few months, we've been quietly building a standalone X Chat app for iOS," Boswell wrote.
"Use it. Test it. We want your feedback," he said.
X Chat is an enhanced version of the direct message (DM) feature on the X platform, which is claimed to be end-to-end encrypted .
However, a number of security experts have previously warned that the service is not as secure as other encrypted messaging apps such as Signal.
It's not yet known whether the company has addressed those concerns in the standalone app it's testing.
