CAN 2025: the Senegalese bitter after Morocco's victory on the green carpet

Two months after the final of the African Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football cancels Senegal's coronation. The appeal jury of the African football body declares Morocco the winner on the green carpet.

A decision that scandalizes the Senegalese. ''It's a disappointment, because the anger is still there, because if they also just told us that they are going to take away what we have, with dignity, as Senegalese, me personally, it touches me deep in my heart.'', declares EL Hadji Diasse, student.

His compatriot Saliou Diop DIOP denounces a scandal ''It's scandalous, that's what everyone in sport really had to express as an opinion. It's scandalous''.

The CAF appeal jury relied on articles 82 and 84 of the CAN regulations to declare Senegal forfeited and therefore losing with a score of 3-0. While the Senegalese government is calling for an international investigation for suspicion of corruption against CAF, for this analyst, this verdict tarnishes the image of African football.

''Really, it's a scandal and it doesn't honor the Confederation of African Football. That's a big task, it's a humiliation, it's an exposure of the flaws in our football and we didn't need that. Already CAF had often been criticized for its incompetence in competitions, there were shortcomings and we often decried that by wanting to show a very good image of our football. Except that this discredits all of African football, says Pape Alassane Ndiaye, sports analyst journalist.

the announcement of the verdict of the Confederation of African Football, the Senegalese Football Federation denounced what it describes as a unique, unprecedented, unacceptable decision which brings discredit to African football. She announces that she is initiating proceedings to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
